The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions is a standing committee of the Senate. It is chaired by Bill Cassidy (R-LA), with Bernard Sanders (I-VT) as ranking member. Like every congressional committee, it does the detailed work the full chamber cannot: holding hearings, marking up bills in its jurisdiction before they reach the floor, and overseeing the executive-branch agencies it covers. A bill that never gets a hearing here never gets a vote — which is why the chair's control of the calendar is the committee's most consequential power.
