Senate Budget Committee Members

6 of its 20 members are on the November 3, 2026 ballot — the 6 Class II senators on the committee. Senators serve six-year terms in three staggered classes; only Class II is on the 2026 ballot, so most of the committee is not up this cycle.

The Senate Committee on the Budget is a standing committee of the Senate. It is chaired by Ron Johnson (R-WI), with Jeff Merkley (D-OR) as ranking member. Like every congressional committee, it does the detailed work the full chamber cannot: holding hearings, marking up bills in its jurisdiction before they reach the floor, and overseeing the executive-branch agencies it covers. A bill that never gets a hearing here never gets a vote — which is why the chair's control of the calendar is the committee's most consequential power.

The majority party holds the chair and a majority of seats on every committee, in rough proportion to its margin in the chamber, so the 10–10 split above follows directly from the current party breakdown. Seniority within each party — the rank column — determines who moves up when a seat opens, and the most senior minority member becomes chair if control of the chamber flips.
